Most of the events weren't according to his plan. Actually every turning point wasnt in his plans but he rolled with it. Ichigo kicking his ass wasnt in his plan, the ep wasnt in his plan, his experiments with the captains coming after him wasnt part of his plan. The only thing that did go according to plan was his influence over everyone until he completed his testing.
